A fantastic morning tour which is tailormade for lovers of birds and birdwatching, a visit to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary will introduce holiday-makers to a stunning array of birdlife. After an early morning pick up from your hotel, you will be driven to a hustling and bustling ferry service which runs between Ribander and Chorao across the waters of the Mandovi River. The ferry journey in itself is an experience, as you rub shoulders with locals and get the chance to admire the Goan landscapes from the water.
After the ferry journey, you will arrive at the entrance to the sanctuary which is served by a paved walkway, as well as dissected by waterways which you will explore via a mesmerising canoe ride around the mangroves. The sanctuary, which is named after the eminent Indian ornithologist, consists of 440 acres and is mainly covered by mangrove forest. There is a diverse array of flora and fauna to be encounter within the sanctuary, but it is the birdlife which attracts much of the interest. You can spot countless species, including heron, kite, cormorant, kingfisher and bittern to name but a few.
You will have around two hours in the park to tick off as many bird species as you can, and keep an eye out for crocodiles too – it isn’t unusual to see one sunbathing on the banks of the river in the morning sunshine. After your in-depth wildlife adventure, you’ll be transported back to your hotel via the Mandovi River ferry, arriving back around midday.
