Katie, our Goa Product Manager describes her personal experience in Wildernest...
Goa has always been famous for its beaches but to me the state’s striking interior is just as impressive.
During my last trip to Goa, I was lucky enough to head inland and spend some time exploring the Western Ghats. I spent the night in a stunning eco-lodge called Wildernest, just a couple of hours’ drive from the coastal region. This striking lodge enjoys a prominent position in the Sahyadri Valley, amid thick jungle and overlooking the Vazra Falls. The views here are simply sublime and easily some of the best I have seen during my travels around Goa.
On arrival, I was greeted by one of the local guides who talked through the lodge’s daily programme. “You can do as much or as little as you like” he said. I opted for the former, wanting to make the most of my short stay in this unique place.
Starting with the Highest Point Trek, I followed my guide up a rocky pathway and reached a panoramic hilltop view point just in time to watch the sun set. As the light faded, we made our steady descent, with the jungle around us coming alive.
My evening was spent eating delicious cuisine and watching the local villagers perform a lamp dance where, to my amazement, they danced around the wooden dining room with lit oil lamps carefully balanced on the top of their heads. I was told that this was to celebrate Diwali, the festival of light which was taking place that weekend.
After an early start and hearty breakfast, I set off again into the jungle in search of a nearby waterfall. My guide pointed out snakes, lizards and exotic birdlife along the way as we hiked through the undergrowth. After a cooling dip in the waterfall pool and a chance to take some photos, we started our walk back to the lodge.
My last few hours at Wildernest were spent lounging by the pool and taking in the stunning setting with a lime sweet and salty drink in hand.
